Review of current work - Edgar Schmitz

Overal, BAS7 is a successful art show. Both the locations of the work and the work itself are a true testament to the nature of British art at this time.

However, I think that despite the overall success of the show, there is one artist’s work which let’s all others down. This I believe is the work of Edgar Schmitz. His installations combine video and sound which, I noticed whilst viewing, seems to annoy people near.

One of his videos is projected onto the ceiling in Plymouth museum. The dislocated nature of the piece does nothing to show how great the architecture of the building is. I know that this isn’t what I was meant to be looking at whilst on location but altogether I found the museum much more visually engaging whilst there.

Not only was the museum more artistically pleasing but the sounds that accompanied the video were plain annoying. The museum location created an environment that I believe would be impossible to enjoy such a piece of work.

Although BAS 7 shows many great works of current British art, Edgar Schmitz lets down both the museum and the show.

Artist Proposal-

(In response to Curatorial Brief)

After visiting the allocated space to exhibit it, I have come to the conclusion that a film project about World War II, specifically Local would be very effective and make maximum use of the space as it could cover the whole Foyer without being obstructive to the general public.

The crack in the Foyer floor, being as it was provoked during World War II bombings, would be an excellent artefact to incorporate in to the piece. The projection will be both educational and artistic informing the viewers of the devastating results of the war and possibly the regeneration of Plymouth.

The piece will be accompanied by a selected piece of music to create a dramatic overall theme, having fast, slow, loud and quiet parts to create a lot of tense in the piece. Overall the piece will be aimed at a huge age ranges, however it will be designed to fit in with the Key Stage 2 History Curriculum.

Exhibition opportunities at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery

Due to demand there is current opportunity available to exhibit at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. The proposed space for the exhibition is in the foyer area, in the ground floor space, the idea is that it uses the walkway area of the museum instead of the typical gallery room areas.

The space would be best suited to an installation, a 3D piece, or film projection. The idea of the exhibition is for it to explore the impact of World War 2 on Plymouth, however with the integration of the history of the museum in some way, perhaps its architecture and context in history. The educational potential within the exhibit must be considered, as well as the potential for interaction with viewers – this will be central as it will be in the main foyer area.

There are many possibilities and exciting opportunities within this proposed exhibition, research will be needed and visits to the Museum are much encouraged and will be invaluable when proposing work for the specific space.
