Architecture of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery

    Research...
    • Designed by Messrs Thornly and Rooke of Plymouth
    • Cost £13,313 for the building of the museum
    • Opened on October 25th 1910
    • The style of Architecture is called Edwardian Baroque.

    • This was the style of many buildings built in the British Empire during the Edwardian era (1901-1910)
    • the features of this architecture were drawn from two main sources.. the architecture of France in the 18th century, and that of Sir Christopher Wren in England in the 17th century
    • Typical features of this architectures include, extensive rustication, usually heavier at ground level, exaggerated arched openings, columns with 'engaged' blocks and attention to detail around ceilings and windows. (All of which can be seen obviously in the Plymouth museum and Art gallery!)
    • This period of architectural history is considered a 'retrospective' one, since it is contemporary with Art nouveau... (Artists of Art Nouveau - Gustav Klimt, Antony Gaudi, Egon Schiele and Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec.)

    History key stage 2 Curriculum

    History key stage 2 (curriculum)-

Victorian Britain or Britain since 1930

    11. Teachers can choose between a study of Victorian Britain or Britain since 1930.

    Victorian Britain

    1. A study of the impact of significant individuals, events and changes in work and transport on the lives of men, women and children from different sections of society.

    *Britain since 1930

    1. A study of the impact of the Second World War or social and technological changes that have taken place since 1930, on the lives of men, women and children from different sections of society.
*Here is a part of a Key Stage 2 curriculum for history. I have extracted this part as it covers World War 2 which is what we are hoping to cover in our gallery space. Fortunately the guidelines are very broad giving us a lot of leeway with our ideas.

    *Local history study

    7. A study investigating how an aspect in the local area has changed over a long period of time, or how the locality was affected by a significant national or local event or development or by the work of a significant individual.

*This is an ideal part of the history curriculum for our project as the focus of our exhibition is to show how the local area of Plymouth was effected by World War 2.
